In the heart of the bustling city of Hyderabad, Sravah is a terrace landscaping project of a forty year old house inhabited by a joint family for more than two decades.
The available area is divided broadly into three parts, namely, a sit out, a party space and a place for the family to use as a home gym by day and enjoy a movie together at night.
All of these spaces could open up into one huge space for gatherings to be held. Careful thought and consideration was put into every element of the design to achieve the practical and aesthetic space that it is today.
The distinctive character and personality of the house was capable of being translated onto the landscaping design by means of repurposing and using the old doors from the house to create visual barriers. Rescued wood was an extensively used material in the landscaping to make jaalis, partitions and shelves. Semi-circular ferrocement shells are used in the pergola design and the language of terracotta tiles from the existing roofing is carried forward onto the design by incorporating a terracotta mosaic. Rescued tiles from the site itself were used in the flooring on one part of the terrace to create interesting patterns.
The surrounding context constrains the amount of natural light the site receives and hence, plants that require only indirect or filtered natural light were used in this design. The religious devotion of the family gave rise to the need to provide flowering plants such that in any given season, they may have at least one kind of flower.
