Shilpa
Nakronda, Dehradun
Shilpa is an office space situated on the terrace of a play school in Nakronda, Dehradun. It is designed and built with the goal of reducing its environmental impact.
Choice of Technique :- Gabion Wall with Artifacts and salvaged materials , Insulated Bamboo walls and insulated Ceiling.
The objective was to create an office space that exhibits the artifacts, preserved by the client since a few decades. As the word Shilpa means Sculpture or Work of Art which appropriately fulfils this vision so, we named our project Shilpa.
Design
Our design is a blend of the sustainable approach that is bridged with the client's
vision and made this office space artistic.
The site is divided such that it serves two purposes. The Primary purpose is to
utilise the materials available with client to get an office space in effective way to reduce carbon footprint. And the secondary is to exhibiting the artifacts. So, the idea was to make a gabion wall (typically a gabion wall is full of stones but this one has multiple things inside it)with more weight like stones on base and as we go up the wall, the weight reduces with the usage of materials like terracotta tiles, diyas and wooden utensils, artifacts that makes it more stable. On other three sides, we provided bamboo insulated walls.
Illumination
Architecture of project gives a great opportunity to utilise natural light more efficiently during the day and storing energy using solar panels installed on southwest side of roof in 17 degrees angle for illumination in dark and protect the space, aptly, from harsh sun during the noon. The design utilises the winter sun as well as the summer sun.
Heat and ventilation
The HVAC system of a modern day built space is completely controlled and is no-more a natural response to the climate of the place. This office space has got an opportunity to use the light breeze which is quite frequent and hence is ventilated naturally.
Characterisation and personality
Shilpa has a unique and artistic personality. As it exhibits all the artifacts that are special to the owner (who will also be the user). This provides a jolly vibe and a sense of belongingness which fills the space with positivity.
In order to provide an extra ordinary characteristic to the space and positive environmental impact, we should utilise every material available and reuse it in an effective and efficient manner. The materials utilitied are renewable, non-toxic, and have a long lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacement.
The exemplary material that are used in the project are:
